The Elks Veterans Bunker, a project that was spearheaded by St. Helens Elks Lodge #1999, is the first veteran’s resource facility in the nation to be established by the Elks organization.
With a veteran population exceeding 5,000 in Columbia County, Elks Veterans Committee Chair Alta Lynch says “the bunker is designed to meet their needs through advocacy, research and camaraderie”. While the bunker is a project led by the local Elks Lodge, Lynch says “it is the perfect example of a community effort”.
The project has received support from St. Frederic Church, the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars. ADA access was made possible through one man’s donation of a wheelchair ramp, while veterans added the railings and members from the National Guard installed pavers to widen the sidewalk. The front lawn features an artistically designed welcome sign bearing a bald eagle, also provided by a veteran.
